Project

Events on the open air stage in Lavis, a village in the Italian Trentino, have a long tradition forming part of the cultural identity of the community. The dependence of the stage on wind and weather traditionally led to postponement or cancellation of plays and concerts. In order to guarantee secure events not only for the community members but also for the numerous summer visitors, the community decided to cover the stage with a light and translucent as well as partially convertible roof. Considering these requirements, the architects Kugel and the engineering office Rein, Stuttgart developed a combination of a stationary and convertible roof with a total area of ca. 800 m². The stationary roof covers and protects the stage area. The convertible roof which can be opened by means of a supporting structure with traction cables, protects the spectators against wind and rain. The lightness of the PVC/PES membrane elements, whose details were developed together with Temme // Obermeier, allows for an open air feeling whether the roof is closed or open. Both roof areas are connected by a central main steel beam with polycarbonate elements which protect the open roof during winter months. With the help of manual winches and about 3 – 4 people, this 500 m² large membrane field can be brought into parking position or tensioned over the seats within a few minutes.
